Growing Up

When I was younger I wanted to be,
A little bit older, not just three.
Another year later I had turned four,
Now I could almost open the door.
The next five years passed in no time,
All of a sudden I was nine.
Twelve months later it happened then,
Double figures I was now ten.
I'd been to school since I was five,
That was a long time, half my life.
Another year in the junior school,
Under Mr Kaye who did rule.
The secondary school I did see,
When I joined in nineteen seventy.
After the last, this school was large,
Headmaster Mr Swinn was in charge
I was there five long years,
When I left there weren't any tears.
That was way back in seventy-five,
But that was only the start of my life.
No more tears I couldn't sob,
I had to go out and find a job.
Unlike school I couldn't shirk.
I was now being paid to work.
